Open Lab Starter Kit
How might we generate easy-to-follow and easy-to-access machine assembly guidelines semi-automatically?
project overview
Starting a digital fabrication workshop requires a set of machinery, which is often imported and unaffordable. The Open Lab Starter Kit (OLSK) is an InMachines project in cooperation with Fab City Hamburg, which aims at creating a repository of eight open-source machines to be replicable locally and with lower costs. The documentation of these open-source machines needs to include their assembly manual.
To create these assembly manuals as time-efficiently as possible, we developed a system that generates these documents semi-automatically online and on an easy-to-follow 3D-interactive interface.

process
The precedent project Fabulaser resulted in a high-quality assembly manual, but limited in scalability, since it was created in InDesign, page by page, meaning a small change in the machine demanded the recreation of several pages.

requirements
As requirements, the new assembly manual system should generate the content as automatic as possible, the content should be easy to update, it should maintain the positive user experience of the previous version and should be open-source and within the capabilities and skills of the current team.
Time-efficient
The manual generation system should as automatic as possible to allow the creation of 8 manuals in a short time.
Easy to update
The machines continuously improving and the manual needs to be able to follow.
Smooth user experience
It should keep all the proven positive usability aspects of its previous version.
Open-source
It needs to be avaible to the public to copy and modify.
Fit the project limitations
The solution needs to be developed within the project budget and team capabilities.
We also performed a research on the available technologies to fulfill our goals, discovering that the ThreeJS Javascript library and the Google Sheets API were suitable for our project, and sketched a process scheme to have an overview of how the system would work.
Based on the previous expert and user experience gained in this project, we as a team decided on a list of features, prioritizing according to the level of importance. This was also used for controlling and defining the project MVP.

With the implementation of the MVP, the manual was ready to be tested. Throughout the several machine assembly workshops, the needs and difficulties of users were observed and noted, and considered in the next iteration.

results
In addition to the basic functionalities mentioned previously, they included the highlighting of the clicked part for better identification, the assembly step menu and a how-to section with animations to assist the user in complicated steps.
As an outcome, this assembly manual not only provides a smooth machine assembly to the user with clear visual instructions, but it is also innovative, open-source, and efficient. The system automatically generates the list of assembly steps, calculates and displays the parts list using the 3D model file as a source, which saves time in production and allows the manual to be easily modified and updated.
